What is a blog?

What is a blog? A blog can be considered many different things to different people and it also depends on the situation at which the blog is being used. Some people may use a blog to comment about news, current events or even just about movies or book reviews. There are also personal blogs, corporate blogs and some blogs focus on a certain subject.

When a person writes a personal blog it is often an ongoing diary about their life. Some people will also create blogs if they are on vacation or living in another country for a period of time. Writing on the blog will allow that person to communicate with friends and family on their daily adventures. Though personal blogs are not often read by many, it gives the author their own personal satisfaction.

Corporate blogs can be used for internal use to create a greater communication between its workers. An internal blog can help a business or corporation update their employees on new developments and it also allows employees to communicate with each other and discuss new developments. It may also be used for external use such as marketing or PR purposes.

Blogs may also be created to focus on certain subjects such as political blogs, travel blogs, fashion blogs, music blogs and the list can go on forever. Blogs such as theses bring people with the same interest together. It gives them a chance to express their feelings without being judged. It also allows a person to argue their point with someone who shares different ideas.

Before this class I had never blogged before and was really not fully aware of what blogging entailed. After almost a whole semester of blogging for our class, I gained a greater understanding of what blogging means to me and learned that blogging can be used for a variety of different reasons. We did over twenty different blogs throughout the semester and all displayed a new form of how a blog can be used.

We blogged about short stories, other classmates blogs, other websites and a variety of other forms of blogs. Each blog gave me the chance to broaden my perspective on a certain subject. For example, when we were asked to blog on a website using the CRAPP test it gave me a chance to look deeper into what the content is being placed on a website and how to tell whether the content is factual or not.

Blogging with the class allowed me to get an insight how my other classmates viewed the readings and often broadened my view of thinking. Reading others blogs brought different ideas that I would normally not think about. I also enjoyed commenting on other peoples blogs and I also liked receiving blog responses from my other classmates as well as the instructor. Receiving blog responses pointed out to me my strengths in my writing as well as areas I could work on. Receiving the instructor’s comments often gave me confirmation that I am writing on the right tract or maybe how I may have missed the idea of the assignment.

I enjoyed blogging for the most part, though there were times when we were required to write a certain amount and I had to think real hard about how to accomplish the required writing amount. I also enjoyed blogging much more than having to turn in homework assignments. Not only for the reason that many have mentioned, that it saves paper but also because it felt less like homework and more of me expressing my views and opinions for others to share. After this class I highly doubt I will continue to blog on my own page but if there is ever a time in my life where blogging skills are needed I will now I will be able to fulfill those skills due to the practice I have had in this class.

"Discrimination is a Virtue" and the Democratic Election

The current Democratic presidential nomination race includes two nominees that are often considered a "minority" in today's political system. Senator Hilary Clinton an Senator Barack Obama are the two candidates. Clinton is a white female while Obama is an African American male. I feel that just because both of these candidates are of a minority in the political world, people are cautious not to show "discrimination" towards them. According to Robert Keith Miller in his essay, "Discrimination is a Virtue" he writes that discrimination does not always have to relate to racism but is also means the "ability to tell differences." This is important to remember during the election. Just because the candidates are a female and African American does not mean we should not discriminate their political views. As Miller says, "The ability to make intelligent judgments is essential both for the functioning of society and as a whole."

Global Warming Visual

For my extended argument, I am writing about the debate of global warming. The above graph shows the changes in global temperature, sea level and Northern Hemisphere snow cover. The graph shows that from the years 1850-2000, global temperature and the sea level have increased while the Northern Hemisphere snow cover has decreased. Such information would be useful in my paper in that it shows that there has been a change in our climate which helps support the idea that global warming does exist

Negatives About Prospectus

  1. What are some ways the students plagiarized?
  2. Give more detail about the topics that will be discussed in the paper.
  3. Not a very strong thesis in introduction paragraph.

Black English

James Baldwin makes a compelling argument in his essay “If Black English isn’t A language, What is?’ regarding language and the roll it plays in our cultural and even personal identities. Baldwin goes to state that language is a political instrument and proof of power, “It is the most vivid and crucial key to identity: It reveals the private identity, and connects one with, or divorces one from, the larger, public, or communal identity.” Baldwin shows that language can be broken down to many parts and through language a person reveals who he or she is.

Baldwin also addresses how the Black English has helped develop and influence the White Americans English. He mentions that he wonders what white Americans would sound like if there had never been any black people in the United States. He supports his claim that the language of the black cultural is to get just as much credit as the language of the white cultural for the formation of the English we speak today. He uses the example of  how the White Americans  have adopted the Jazz Age and without the black cultural influence, the Jazz we know would not be the same.

Baldwin uses good historical evidence to support his claim and leaves out logical fallacies that may provide the reader with false information. Baldwin is very descriptive offers the reader many examples to further support his claim. It can also be trusted that James Baldwin is a credible author for he has experienced different forms of language by living in the United States and France and also his background of being involved in the Civil Rights Movement.

"Concealed Carry on Campus"

“Students for Concealed Carry on Campus.” Concealed Campus. (2007), 13

            March 2008. <http://concealedcampus.org/index.htm.>

The source I chose so site and evaluate is the website “Students for Concealed on Campus.” This website advocates for the right of students and teachers to be able to carry a concealed weapon on college campuses. The supporters of this site argue that students over the age of 21 should be able to carry a weapon that they are able to carry just about everywhere else in order to protect themselves. Since school shootings such as the one at Virginia Tech, it is argued that students and teachers should have a way to protect themselves since it often is too late by the time authority arrive to the scene.

This website lists facts and statistics regarding how many states allow concealed carry and why concealed carry should be legal on college campuses. It is very clear what this view of this website is, but they also offer the readers possible arguments someone from the other side of the argument may say. I can trust that this site is reputable and can be used in my argument paper because they offer video clips of their representatives speaking on well-known news stations such as Fox News. It was last updated on March 4, 2008, which shows that the information provided is recent and accurate. The website is targeted to college students to try to get them involved on their own campuses and to reach out to their local government officials. I found this site to be very clear and easy to navigate through. Their purpose was easy to understand and they offered good reason and sources for the stand that they have taken which is to allow concealed carry on campuses.

"The Right to Fail"

Who decides what is success and what is failure? According to the “American Dream” success involves graduating high school, attending a college university and then become successful in a professional career.  In “The Right to Fail”, William Zinsser writes, “ The right to fail is one of the few freedoms this country does not grant its citizens.” Today there is so much pressure for a teenager to go to college, whether they are following the footsteps of everyone else in their family or are the first in their family to go to college.

My mom didn’t finish college, but rather got married and started a family. Though she did not complete college, that has not affected her ability to be a hard worker. She is in sales at a computer company and works with many people that have a college degree, yet she is one of the best sales people in her company. This shows that receiving a college education is not where you receive all your knowledge and you can still be successful if you are determined.

Though my mom did not complete college, she has always urged me to go to college. Ever since I was young I knew I would go to a four-year university and become a nurse. This may be considered following the “American Dream” but has always been my dream that I formed for myself. I have always strived to receive good grades and consider getting a “C” a failure. But as I have grown I have come to realize that failure is what makes a person grow.  Without failing you will never be able to know how you can make yourself better.

Everyone has their own definition of “success” and I feel that they should all be respected. Everyone must fail at some point in his or her life in order to be able to grow and become a stronger person. As Zinsser says, “Don’t be afraid to fail” for with failure comes growth and maturity.

CRAAP Test

I chose to analyze the website Martin Luther King. After reviewing the CRAAP test I realized that this website is not a reliable website to use. One of the first things I notice on the web page is the link “Why the King Holiday Should be Repealed” When you click on the link you will be brought to a paper that was created by a source “ The Creativity Movement” which provides a web address that did not exist when I tried to visit the site. Since there is not an accurate web-address provided, this shows that it may not be a reliable source of information. There is also an article that talks about the night that King died. Though there is information cited from a normally reliable source, Newsweek magazine, there is also information cited from Rev. Ralph Abernathy who was a close friend of King and wrote a book “ And the Walls Came Tumbling Down.” Abernathy states that King was actually “having sex with three white women, one of whom he brutally beat.” This story is coming from one man and does not prove to be a reliable source.

This website is hosted by Stormfront. When I clicked on the link I learned that Stormfront is a white pride community. There are blogs posted talking about how Martin Luther King jr. was not a good man. Since the Martin Luther King jr. website is hosted by a white pride community, it shows that their views are biased and not based off of facts.

On the right side of the web-page there is a link for “Jews and Civil Rights.” I don’t understand the relevance of this link. I thought the website was to become more educated about Martin Luther King jr. and not about the Jews and Civil rights? The currency of the page has also not been kept up. The most recent information posted is from 1998.

The purpose of this website is to inform people about Martin Luther King jr. but comes from a source that is not reliable and trying to portray King as a bad man. I would not use this information in any sort of research paper or a source of knowledge. I believe this web site is a perfect example as to why people should be careful about which websites they get their information from.

Logical Fallacies

The article I chose to write about is about Vermont’s consideration of lowering the legal drinking age limit. It is argued in the article that the current laws are not working and maybe by lowering the legal drinking age then it will prevent underage drinkers from binge drinking and driving while intoxicated. Mothers Against Drunk Driving and other organizations and lawmakers state that lowering the age limit will not help but only make matters worse.

Within the third paragraph, the author uses over generalization. The Mothers Against Drunk Driving state “the higher age limit has saved thousands of lives since the 1984 enactment of the National Minimum Drinking Age Act.” This statement is very broad and not backed up with sources to provide the reader with a greater understanding of where the statistic came from and if it is reliable.

I also chose to write on the article “Arizona Weighs Bill to Allow Guns on Campuses.”  The article writes about lawmakers wanting to allow people to be able to carry concealed weapons at public colleges and Universities.

The author uses cause and effect in the article. Ms. Johnson, a Republican from Mesa, said, “she believes that the recent carnage at Northern Illinois University could have been prevented or limited if an armed student or professor had intercepted the gunman. The police, she said, respond too slowly to such incidents and, besides, who better than the people staring down the barrel to take action?”  This statement states that because students and teachers are not allowed to carry guns, the incident at NIU could have been prevented which is not a backed up statement.

Another fallacy used in the article is by using the either/or approach. It is evident with in the paper that the reader much choose whether or not they believe guns should be allowed to be carried on campus or not. It does not give the reader other choices that may be able to compromise both.

"Middle Schoolers Get the Pill"

The question of whether or not middle school girls should be able to receive birth control pills and patches from the student health center is discussed in the article “Middle-Schoolers Get the Pill.”  The article supports this idea by saying that many of the girls are already sexually active and since there is no way of stopping them from making that decision then the situation can at least be improved by providing the girls with birth control and safe sex education. The Boston Globe sates that these young girls are not just being “handed” the pill but must “first travel a long-even arduous-road of counseling” in order to receive the pill. The girls are educated on the dangers of underage sex and urge them to wait until they are older and more mature. It is also stated that King Middle School has a high population of poor kids and immigrants. The school is now providing health services to lower class teenage girls who may not be able to afford private gynecologists.

The counter- argument presented in this article is that no eleven year-old should have sex at all. The argument challenges the argument that eleven year-olds should have the choice of sex and receive free birth control.  The girls are so young at this age to fully see the consequences that can occur in having underage-sex. It can be seen that everyone agrees that these girls are too young and should be urged to wait until they are older to have sex but also provides them with resources to avoid getting pregnant or a sexually transmitted disease.

One perspective I feel has been overlooked is the concern of the parents. The parents are left out through out the whole article. I think this is a major concern for many parents and something they should be involved in. The girls are still minors and the parents should be able to be involved in whether or not their daughters start taking the pill and should also have some influence in how they want to educate their daughters about underage-sex.

Rhetorical Analysis Review

When we were first given the assignment that we would be writing a rhetorical analysis paper, I was at initaly very confused and had no idea how I would be able to go about writing it. But all the lessons and blog assignments that we did prior to writing our final paper really helped me. I learned that there is a big difference between just reviewing a text and actually going deep and critically thinking about what the author is trying to display. It was also helpful that I had a strong interest in the article that I based my rhetorical analysis paper off of.

Writing the rough draft first allowed me to get my initial thoughts down and provide a good “back bone” for my final draft. The one-on-one meetings to review my rough draft were also considerably helpful. Nick was able to help me see the many errors that I had made and guided me to better organize my ideas into a well-structured paper. I learned there is much room for improvement and realized how important rough draft papers are.

The thing I need to work on the most is better transitions. In my rough draft I didn’t put any transitions in. Though in my final draft I did include transitions, I know I can greatly improve those for my next papers to come. I also learned to not be so redundant in my writing, though there was a great improvement from my rough draft I have learned that it is important to clearly state what it is you want to say and once you have stated it there is no reason for you to mention it again.

For my next paper I will have someone else also read my paper for grammatical errors. I learned that no matter how many times you yourself read over your paper you will never be able to see all the errors made. Someone else may be able to see something that you had not noticed. Using better word choice is also an area I needed to improve. Instead of using words such as “provide” I learned your paper sounds much more sophisticated and flows better if you replace the repeated word “provide” with words such as “exhibit”.

I feel that it is important to make mistakes, because without making mistakes you are not able to realize your true potential. I found that I learned a lot from this single paper and I hope that I will be able to learn from my mistakes in this paper to better improve on the papers to come. In all I was pleased with my final grade and will work even harder on my synthesis paper so I can receive an even better grade. I want to receive an A in the class and in order to reach this goal I will push myself and will work very hard.

"Allegory of the Cave" and "The Banking Concept of Education" Synthesis

Both Texts focus on the concept of education, and how there are different methods in teaching. The texts to be synthesized are Paulo Freire’s “The Banking Concept of Education” and Plato’s “Allegory of the cave”. Paulo Freire argues that the “banking” concept of education is solely the teacher making “deposits” which the students receive, memorize, and repeat. Freire states that the students are filled with content that is detached from reality and that dialogue and communication between the teacher and the students is non-existent. The humanist theory of teaching contradicts the ideas from the banking concept of education. The humanist theory states that students should be prepared for the real life situations by thinking more critically and that the teachers and students learn from one another, not just the teacher being the sol educator. In Platos “Allegory of the Cave” he argues the idea that one cannot go through life being ignorant, but must be open-minded to the world surrounding. Just as the escaped prisoner opened his eyes to the suns light, so must we to reality. Plato offers a different approach for the teacher then the one described in Frefire’s essay. Plato says that teachers act as facilitators and that the students are already filled with knowledge, but through the teacher asking questions and facilitating discussions, the students are able to realize their full potential.

In Conclusion, both Freire and Plato propose that the best way for a student to learn is through critical thinking, and preparing for reality. Both suggest that teachers and students learn from each other and one is not solely “all knowing”. It is important for the educator to recognize that dialog is important for the students to be able to think for themselves and become more intoned with reality they must face.

"Listening to the Jobs Report" Synthesis

The article, “Listening to the Jobs Report” discusses the need for a more sensible stimulus package. In the last jobs report, it was reported that more then 1.38 million people had been unemployed for six months or more as of January 2008. The last time the unemployment numbers were so low was after the 2001 recession. The author of this article focuses on the issue of unemployment increase that is occurring in the United States just as it is occurring to the residents in Flint, Michigan.

After the 2001 recession Congress extended unemployment compensation once the initial thirteen weeks of benefits was exhausted but in the upcoming stimulus bill congress may not include an extension to the unemployment compensation. The Republicans are blocking the jobless benefits while the Democrats are pushing for an increase in benefits. The Republicans argue that and extended unemployment benefits will cause those unemployed to not be motivated to look for a new job as quickly. If the lawmakers would trim the less effective stimulus measures under discussion, including the tax rebates for the rich, it would leave more room for jobless benefits for the unemployed.

Over 17,000 jobs were lost in January, the worst it has been in more then four years. On top of the large numbers of jobs lost there was also a decrease in the numbers of jobs created. During the same period the year before 169,000 jobs were created compared to the 42,000 jobs that were created this year. The decrease in jobs being created should only give congress an even more reason to approve the stimulus package, which includes an extended unemployment compensation.

With a decrease in jobs being created and an increase in the number of people being unemployed means those who are already unemployed will stay unemployed for longer due to the lack of jobs to search for. The unemployed are also more likely to stop spending, which also deprives the economy of the much needed boost. The long-term unemployed are also more likely to settle for jobs with little pay and no benefits, which only prolongs the spending boost once they do go back to work.

This article can be closely compared to the documentary “Roger and Me” by Michael Moore. Both authors are trying to portray the message that people who are unemployed need financial help and they need help from the Government. The people of Flint, Michigan were suffering from a large layoff due to the closure of the General Motors Factory. The closure of the factory closely relates to the idea that the author of “Listening to the Jobs report” is expressing, that with an increase of the unemployed also comes a decrease in jobs being created. In both articles, the authors show that when people don’t have jobs it also affects those current operating business because the consumers no longer have the extra money to shop. “Listening to the Jobs Report” focuses on gaining the Government support while Moore shows how the people are affected. Each author offers two different ways to comprehend the two articles allowing the audience a broader view of the situation.

"Passing Before Life's Very Eyes"

When I first viewed this story I was not quit sure what to think nor what to expect. The title of the story, “Passing Before Life’s Very Eyes” what at first glance make you think this story would be very sad and somber, but in fact it contains much humor throughout

The Author uses pathos to show the humor. The images of the characters are funny and less serious. This displays that though the story is about the man going through his life before he dies, it can still be comical just as his life most likely was. Even though it is not expressed in words, the strong use of pathos and images give you the idea that the cause of his death was due to lung cancer and smoking.

The language also expresses the humor that is shown throughout the story. For example, after the man is finished going through his life before he dies he asks, “So what do we do now. Just sit around and wait for everything to go black?”(Wolfgang 230). This quote shows that even now he is about to die he is able to make a sarcastic remark. This is just one of the many examples used in the story.

Roger and Me

In the documentary “Roger and Me”, Michael Moore uses logos to express his point to the audience. This documentary is on the struggle of a small town in Flint,Michigan after Roger Smith, the chairman for General Motors, closed the General Motors factory and laid off over 30,000 employees. The closure of the factory caused many problems for the town, especially economically. Many of the employees were left with no jobs to go to and were being evicted from their homes. Moore spends a lot of time interviewing those who were directly affected by the closure of the factory, which provides a strong use of logos. Getting the views and testimonies directly from the employees provides the audience with a knowledgeable source. He also spoke with the General Motor lobbyist, which provided the views, and reasoning that General Motors expresses.

"The Southland"

The Southland was written by Henry Miller. It was written to show and inform people about the south and the history it has to offer. The essay targets and audience of men and women with an interest in history and he wants to share with them the passion he has for the south.
Miller uses ethos to show the audience in great detail what the south looks like. He uses descriptions such as: "At Biloxi, Mississippi, there is a row of live oaks planted a century ago by a Greek which are of such staggering loveliness and magnificence as to make one breathless." This is just one of the many examples of how the author gives the reader an idea of what the south looks like.
Miller explains that the northerners can't appreciate the beauty the south has to offer because they only look at the south as being defeated but in contrast the ruins and traces of battle hold the memory for what the southerners believed and what they fought for. Miller writes," There are so many elegant and mysterious ruins throughout the South, so much death and desolation,so much ghostliness." He writes that the south is elegant and mysterious at the same time and that these ruins take the people back to that time.
I thought this this writing displayed a lot of passion that the author had for the south and gave a lot of imagery to show the readers what the south looked liked but it was difficult to read at parts and I had to re-read it several times to fully understand it.

Make A Wish

After viewing a variety of different websites, all in which were uniquely different, it was the Make a Wish Foundation website that really drew my attention. The bright colors, pictures and simple layout are all things that I considered when choosing to analyze this website.
The website was created by a member of the Make a Wish Foundation. After reviewing the website in greater detail, I found this foundation to be very creditable and reliable for what they say and believe. I myself have personal experience with this foundation. When my younger cousin was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Make a Wish Foundation was able to grant a wish for her. It was always Kendall's dream to go to Disneyland and it was the Make a Wish Foundation that made that dream possible.
It is obvious to see just from the headline alone, "Make a Wish",  that this websites sole purpose is to raise money to be able to make sick children's dreams come true. Their goal and purpose is apparent through the pictures and stories told on the website and the mission statement that is displayed: "We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy." The website allows you to read stories and the wishes of just a few of the children they have brought joy to.
The audience is targeted to anyone who is willing ot donate time and money to help make the dreams of a child come true. There have even been many celebrities that have donated their time and money for this cause including, Jennifer Garner, My Chemical Romance and Donald Trum, that's just to name a few. It is important for the audience to see that the organization they may choose to help and give money to is reliable. That is why it is important for the author to keep in mind how the layout and information is presented.
You may expect a website that raises money for children with life-threatening medical conditions to be more somber but the tone for this website is full of hope and joy to show the audience that their organization brings happiness into a child's life.
This websites main appeal is pathos. By displaying pictures of young children with smiles and laughter I am able to observe the goodness this organization brings. These pictures also lead to how the author used ethos. The pictures show the audience and myself that this organization would be worth my time and money. This site contains pictures of celebrity supporters and large sponsors such as Delta Airlines and Disneyland. I am able to observe this through logos. By seeing a celebrity and large corporations involvement brings the reader to believe that this organization is real.
I think it is important for  a writer to take a critical approach when reading information on the internet to make sure that the source and author you are taking your information from is reliable. completing this assignment has shown me the importance of analyzing the information presented on a website and I am now able to see the purpose just by looking at the color, layout and headlines posted before even reading further into the articles.

Blog Analysis

After reviewing a few of my classmates blogs, I decided to analyze Scott's. When viewing his blog the first thing that stands out to me are the pictures of the sharks. Right away I am able to see that he has some sort of interest in sharks and scuba diving. Even the name of his blog, "Shark Cage" gives you a greater understanding for his interest in sharks. His background colors consist of a few different shades of blues and some yellow. The color choices go very well and give a good representation of what kind of person Scott may be. Scott is a history major, and usually the impression I get from a history major is that they might be a little dry and not so interested in adventurous activities. But after reviewing his blog I can see that Scott is defiantly not a "dry" person and and has a great desire for adventure.

"Mother Tongue"

In "Mother Tongue", the author Amy Tan writes about her mothers broken English and the impact that it has had on her as a writer and as a person and how her mothers broken English has been perceived by others. The rhetorical triangle asks who the author is, who the audience is and what the purpose of the text is. In "Mother Tongue", Tan is writing to her mother but I also feel she is addressing  anyone who has emigrant parents. The purpose of Tans essay is to show that  even though one may speak "broken" English, it does not give people the right to look down upon that person or discriminate against them. Even though her mother speaks broke English, she is a very smart and professional woman but has struggled to gain respect because of how she speaks. Tan also wants to show that you can speak many different types of English with different audiences, just as you speak different to a group of adults then you do with your friends.

What is a blog?

I myself have never posted a blog and have read very few blogs posted by others, the few blogs that I have read are ones posted on Facebook or Myspace. Before reading the blog articles posted on Nick's page I had very little information about what a blog actually is and how it can be used in so many different ways. I learned that a blog is a way for a person or an organization to share their ideas, thoughts, music and even pictures with thousands of other people and networks. Posting a blog is much different then just writing in a private journal because it gives you the opportunity to receive feedback from other people and allow you to view an idea from a different point of view. Blogs can also be a useful resource when you are looking to buy a new product. You can use the blog created by the company of your product of interest to see how other consumers have liked the product. Though a blog is a place for you to express your thoughts and ideas, i do not find it appropriate to use it to express racial judgments on other peoples beliefs or religion. A blog should be a place where a person can feel no judgment for what they believe.
